Wallington County Grammar School Entrance Test Format

Wilson’s School uses a two-stage entrance process that begins with the shared Selective Eligibility Test (SET), followed by school-set exams.

The Selective Eligibility Test (SET)

Stage One: Selective Eligibility Test (SET)
This first stage is shared with other Sutton grammar schools and includes two multiple-choice papers. The SET is marked centrally and only determines eligibility for Stage Two. Wilson’s does not use these results for final rankings. Typically, around 500 to 600 candidates progress to the next stage.

Pass Mark

Selective Eligibility Test (SET) Pass Criteria

SET results are usually released about a week after the exam in September. There is no fixed pass mark, as thresholds vary each year depending on overall performance. Each Sutton grammar school sets its own standard, and typically only the top 25–30% of candidates progress to Stage Two.

Overall Pass Marks

There are no published pass marks for the second-stage exam. Final rankings are based on a combined score from both stages, with each school applying its own weighting. Achieving the required standard in the SET or Stage Two does not guarantee a place, as offers depend on overall ranking and the number of available places.

Catchment Area

Wilson’s School does not have a fixed catchment area, but proximity to the school is used as a tiebreaker when scores are equal.

Additional Eligibility

Wilson’s School admits 186 boys into Year 7 each year through Sutton’s co-ordinated admissions process. Applicants must pass the entrance exams to be considered selective.

Boys with an EHCP naming the school are offered places first. Remaining places are allocated in this order:

  1. Looked after or previously looked after children, ranked by test score

  2. 14 boys eligible for Free School Meals, ranked by test score

  3. 9 boys with top scores in the Sporting Aptitude Test

  4. 9 boys with top scores in the Music Aptitude Test

  5. All other applicants, ranked by standardised entrance test results

If candidates achieve the same score, priority is given to those living in the London Borough of Sutton, then by distance from the school. A random ballot is used if ties remain.

Wilson’s School FAQs

You register for the Selective Eligibility Test (SET) via the school’s supplementary registration form, and you must name Wilson’s School on your Local Authority’s Common Application Form by the published deadline.

It is a two-stage process: Stage One (SET) includes multiple-choice English and mathematics; Stage Two (school-set) features written English (creative or comprehension) and mathematical problem-solving.

Very competitive as there are many more applicants than places. Only boys who pass both stages and score highly in Stage Two receive offers under strict oversubscription rules.

No formal catchment area exists. However, for tie-breakers, priority is given to candidates living in the London Borough of Sutton, then by distance to the school’s main entrance.
